-the Marmalades performing at Battle of the Bands Bali 2023
Development
I started learning the guitar at the age of 15. Fueled by the boredom of lockdown, my friend and I would learn a new song each day, and call at the end, teaching each other our newly learned songs. I taught myself using youtube and was fascinated by the songs I was able to replicate and fell in love with practicing the stringed instrument. Time passed and I started playing more, teaching myself as many songs as possible and spending time improving my techniques. I joined a school band, the Marmalades, consisting of my closest friends and started practicing twice weekly at school. We started off with small performances, within classes slowly working up to performing in front of the school.
From then, it became a routine. Learn new songs and perform them at school assemblies and whatever events the school organized. Having this time to practice and perform really helped me improve both my confidence and musical skill. I started off as one of the backing guitarists, sticking mostly to the chords, but slowly improved and ended the year playing the solo in our cover of "Kilby Girl" by the Backseat Lovers.
Stage Hand
Starting my gap year, I traveled to Ireland to work on constructing Electric Picnic, the largest festival in Ireland, and during the festival days, I helped with the running of their "Trailer Park" stage. This would include moving instruments on and off stage, assisting in the sound check, and helping out with any of the bands' requests. It involved long 16 hour days from 11am till 3am which was tiring but I really enjoyed getting to know how to work a stage and the specifics of it all.
